About
NAEVA is an Albuquerque-based organization that works to build Native political power and advance the social, economic, and environmental wellbeing of Indigenous communities in New Mexico and beyond. Rooted in decades of Native organizing, the organization unites Indigenous people to advocate for justice, equity, and a better quality of life both on and off tribal lands.
NAEVA engages in civic participation work, including voter registration, voter education, and outreach in Pueblo, Navajo, Apache, and urban Native communities, working to ensure that Indigenous voices are heard in the political process. It partners with tribal communities across New Mexico, including the state's Pueblos, the Navajo Nation, and the Jicarilla and Mescalero Apache nations, to strengthen civic engagement and representation.
Environmental justice is a central concern for the organization, which addresses the disproportionate environmental harms borne by Native communities, including impacts from extractive industries and pollution. NAEVA advocates for the protection of land, water, air, and sacred places, connecting environmental health to the broader wellbeing and self-determination of Indigenous people.
The organization works on a range of issues affecting Native communities, including economic justice, voting rights, education, and the protection of cultural and natural resources. Its approach centers Indigenous leadership and community priorities, building power from within Native communities rather than imposing external agendas.
By combining civic engagement, advocacy, and community organizing, NAEVA works to advance equity and justice for Indigenous New Mexicans and to address the systemic challenges they face. Supported by donations, grants, and partnerships, the organization plays a significant role in mobilizing Native communities, protecting their interests, and advancing environmental and social justice across New Mexico, contributing to a stronger Indigenous voice in the region's civic and environmental life.
