La Casa Family Advocacy Center

Las Cruces, Southern NM

Comprehensive shelter, counseling, and legal advocacy for survivors of domestic violence in southern New Mexico.

About

La Casa is a Las Cruces nonprofit that provides shelter, advocacy, and support services for survivors of domestic violence in southern New Mexico. Established in 1980, it has served Doña Ana County and the surrounding region for over four decades as a primary resource for individuals and families fleeing abuse.

The organization operates an emergency shelter where survivors and their children can find safety, along with a continuum of services designed to help them rebuild their lives. These include crisis intervention, a 24-hour hotline, safety planning, counseling, legal advocacy, and assistance navigating protective orders and the court system. La Casa also provides transitional housing and support to help survivors achieve long-term independence.

La Casa works with adults and children affected by domestic violence, recognizing the profound impact abuse has on entire families. Its advocates support survivors through the often complex process of leaving an abusive situation, accessing benefits, securing housing, and addressing the emotional trauma of abuse. Children's programs and counseling address the needs of young people who have witnessed or experienced violence in the home.

Beyond direct services, La Casa engages in community education and prevention efforts aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence, healthy relationships, and the resources available to those in danger. By educating the public, it works to reduce stigma and encourage survivors to seek help.

Domestic violence remains a serious issue across New Mexico, and La Casa provides a vital safety net in the Las Cruces area. Funded through grants, donations, and community support, the organization combines emergency response with long-term advocacy, helping survivors move from crisis to safety and stability.
