Indigenous Women Rising

Albuquerque, Albuquerque Metro

Indigenous women's health, reproductive justice, and community wellbeing led by and for Indigenous women and two-spirit people.

About

Indigenous Women Rising is an Albuquerque-based collective and nonprofit dedicated to ensuring the reproductive justice and health of Indigenous people. The organization centers the experiences and needs of Native women, two-spirit, and LGBTQ individuals, working to advance access to reproductive healthcare, education, and self-determination for Indigenous communities.

A central part of the organization's work is its abortion fund, which provides financial assistance to Indigenous people seeking abortion care, helping to cover the costs of procedures and related expenses such as travel. This fund addresses significant barriers to reproductive healthcare that Native people often face, including the limitations of the Indian Health Service and the geographic and financial obstacles of accessing care.

Indigenous Women Rising also operates a midwifery and birth support fund and engages in education and advocacy around reproductive health, sexual health, and the broader concept of reproductive justice as it applies to Indigenous communities. The organization grounds its work in the understanding that reproductive justice for Native people is inseparable from issues of sovereignty, history, and the right to make decisions about one's own body and family.

The organization works to provide culturally rooted education and resources, addressing topics that are often underserved or stigmatized, and to center Indigenous values and traditions in conversations about reproductive health. Its approach recognizes the unique historical and ongoing injustices that Native people have faced regarding reproductive autonomy, including histories of forced sterilization.

Supported by donations, grants, and community contributions, Indigenous Women Rising provides both direct financial assistance and broader advocacy and education. By centering Indigenous people in the movement for reproductive justice, the organization works to expand access to care and to affirm the dignity, autonomy, and health of Native women and LGBTQ individuals across the region and beyond.
