Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico

Santa Fe, Northern NM

Adaptive recreation, sport, and therapeutic outdoor programs for people with physical disabilities across New Mexico.

About

Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico is a Santa Fe-based nonprofit that provides recreational and competitive sports opportunities for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. The organization helps individuals of all ages and ability levels experience the physical, social, and emotional benefits of sports and outdoor activity through adaptive equipment and trained instruction.

The program is well known for its adaptive skiing and snowboarding offerings, providing lessons and specialized equipment that allow people with disabilities to enjoy winter sports at New Mexico ski areas. Beyond the slopes, the organization offers a range of adaptive activities throughout the year, expanding access to recreation that might otherwise be out of reach for people with disabilities.

Participants include people with a wide variety of disabilities, from physical impairments to cognitive and developmental conditions, as well as veterans and others who benefit from adaptive recreation. Trained instructors and volunteers work with each participant to tailor activities and equipment to their abilities, ensuring a safe and rewarding experience.

Adaptive sports offer more than physical exercise: they build confidence, independence, and social connection, and they challenge limiting assumptions about what people with disabilities can do. By creating these opportunities, the organization promotes inclusion and wellbeing for a population that often faces barriers to recreation and physical activity.

The organization relies on volunteers, many of whom are trained to support participants on the slopes and in other activities, as well as on donated and specialized adaptive equipment. Supported by donations, grants, and community partnerships, Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico serves participants from across the region. Its work reflects a belief that everyone, regardless of ability, deserves the chance to experience the joy and benefits of sport and outdoor recreation in New Mexico.
